Southern Coast Farms for Sale in Western Cape

Thatch Farms

More and more people are becoming interested in using natural products for constructing and improving buildings. In the Western Cape the traditional method of thatching has been kept alive for hundreds of years. There are farms along this coast in the Albertinia and Riversdale area that grow Restionaceae.

It takes about five years before a crop of reeds is mature. However, when harvested, reeds from the Western Cape are such good quality, less is needed for thatching. The species grown is unisexual i.e. a plant that is both male and female.

Thatching reeds don't require a lot of attention. Reeds can grow in sand dunes, white sands or beneath chalk rims. The reeds flower January to February (summer) and seed April to May (autumn). Once seeds are dispersed, reeds are harvested with sickles or special reed cutting machinery. The cut reeds are dried and when golden-brown tied into bundles and shaken to remove debris.

The life of a reed roof is from twenty to seventy years. There is an ever increasing demand for this natural, local, eco-friendly and fire resistant product that results in an excellent income. In three years time the reeds can be harvested again. A for sale thatch farm is harder to find.

Flower Farms
